Custom vs Pre‑Made Cat Enclosures: Which Is Best for Melbourne Homes?

Why this decision matters for Melbourne homes

Choosing between a pre‑made enclosure and a custom build affects safety, how your cat uses outdoor space, and how the structure sits with your home. In Melbourne — where homes range from compact terraces and balconies to larger suburban yards — the right approach depends on your layout, how many cats you have, and how long you want the installation to last.

What pre‑made kits offer

Pre‑made enclosures and ready‑to‑assemble kits are attractive because they’re often quicker to source, easier to install, and can be more affordable up front. They typically suit standard balconies, patios or simple courtyard spaces where dimensions are regular. Elite also offers quality pre‑made options with a materials warranty, which can be a good fit if you want a straightforward, warranty‑backed solution without a lengthy custom design process.

What you get with a custom build

A bespoke cat enclosure is designed for the specifics of your property: odd‑shaped side passages, complex rooflines, or a need to integrate perches, tunnels and pet doors. Custom work lets builders select heavier‑duty materials, tailor netting and fixing points for local weather and access, and add enrichment features like elevated landings or secure fence extenders. Elite’s team brings trade experience and on‑site problem solving, which is valuable when standard kits won’t fit or won’t provide the durability you need.

Durability and long‑term value

Longer‑lasting materials and quality workmanship reduce maintenance and replacement costs over time. Many customers point out that sturdier construction and careful installation mean fewer repairs and a better look over the years. One customer noted that a bespoke solution not only looked and performed better than a competitor’s proposal but also came at a notably lower overall price for the same scope—an example of how custom work can sometimes deliver superior long‑term value when done well.

When to choose a pre‑made kit vs a custom build

Consider a pre‑made kit if you have a standard balcony or courtyard, a limited budget, and want a fast turn‑around with warranty cover on materials. Choose custom when you have an awkward or multi‑level space, want integrated features (pet doors, tunnels, perches), need a solution that won’t impede yard movement, or simply want the enclosure to blend precisely with your home. For multi‑cat households or breeders who need large runs or extra security, a custom approach usually makes more sense.

How Elite’s approach helps with the decision

Local customers consistently praise clear communication, quick onsite quoting and craftsmanship that focuses on cat safety and durability. Elite offers both tailored builds and ready‑made options, and the team will assess your site in person to recommend the most practical solution. That on‑site advice is especially useful in Melbourne’s varied housing stock — from compact Elwood balconies to Bayside side passages and Mornington Peninsula yards.

Practical next steps for homeowners

Measure the area you want to enclose and note any access points, windows, or fences that affect installation. Ask any installer about materials, attachment methods for your specific wall or fence type, expected time from quote to completion, and warranty details for materials and workmanship. If your space is non‑standard or you value longevity and tailored features, get an on‑site quote for a custom option; if your space is standard and you want a quick, guaranteed‑backed solution, a pre‑made kit can be the right choice. Elite operates from Carrum Downs and serves Melbourne and surrounding suburbs and can advise which path fits your home and cats best.

Customer review

I originally paid for Catmax Enclosures to come and quote me for a large side of house and back area enclosure. $7300 they proposed, and seemed skeptical at my request that the larger back area (about 12 by 4 meters) should have fence extenders so that the enclosure wouldn't impede movement in the yard - which it would have, if the roof net came down to the fence supports. Charlie came out - for free! Quoted me almost 2 grand less for the same job, and his work is a million times better than anything that the Catmax installer proposed. It's so sturdy and secure, and it looks great. Plus, he installed three carpeted outdoor landings as a part of the job. My furry horde love being able to go outside, and have plenty of space to roam safely. Charlie is a true professional, and his pride in his work and the work of his team is obvious in the results. Cannot recommend more highly!
